Mauritius has one lagoon but four personalities. The north is the social, sheltered coast; the west trades a little polish for sunsets, surf and the island's biggest days out; the east is the long, quiet postcard; and the south barely has a lagoon at all, which is exactly why it is the most spectacular drive. Hotels rarely say this plainly, because every coast has rooms to fill.
The honest rule of thumb: in the winter months (June to September) the south-east trade winds make the east and south breezy, so wind-averse beach lovers should look north and west. In high summer everything is warm, everything is green, and the choice is purely about personality.
